In 1957, Ghana was the first of Britain’s African colonies to gain independence and this cloth was made to celebrate that moment. It is printed with pictures of the first prime minister of Ghana, Doctor Kwame Nkrumah, and of the new Ghanaian coat of arms and flag. The decoration makes use of important pre-colonial symbols. The cloth can be used to explore the decolonisation process of the mid to late 1900s and the formation of new post-colonial national identities.
