This stamnos or wine-jar from Athens was painted in the red-figure technique by an artist scholars have named the Achilles Painter. It shows the departure of a warrior for war with members of his family around him. This ‘snapshot’ of an ancient family offers an opportunity to explore the lives of men and women, the gender roles they were expected to fulfil and the balance of public and private in one of the key ancient Greek city-states, Athens.
