Viking treasure

A bigger picture

Filled with precious objects, often including coins which are especially useful for their dates, hoards are unusual and exciting archaeological finds. They are often tightly packed in sturdy containers, suggesting that their owners buried them for safekeeping, but were prevented from returning to retrieve them. For this reason many hoards are interpreted as an indication of unrest or political change, but some may have been buried for other reasons such as ritual purposes.
