A bigger picture

These pictures and objects are examples of the range of media used by opposing sides to communicate their messages to the local population. They reflect very different views of the security situation and the army presence. All those involved in this conflict – nationalists, loyalists and armed forces – needed popular support both in Northern Ireland and throughout the UK and used a wide range of means to achieve this.

Bus ticket

Issued on Ulsterbus buses in 1974. The back of the ticket carries a confidential phone number for people to call to inform the authorities about paramilitary activity.

Produced in England by the Troops Out Movement in 1980 in solidarity with the Republican movement. It contains a widely used representation of the map of Great Britain transformed into a soldier or policeman attacking Ireland.

Produced by the Sun newspaper in 1995 calling for the release of Sgt. Lee Clegg who was convicted of murder for shooting dead two teenage joyriders in West Belfast. His conviction was later overturned.
